Membership & Security Deposits

In order to secure electric service, a new member must pay a security deposit, a connect or transfer fee and provide his/her social security number, along with a photo ID in our office.  As an alternate to the security deposit, the co-op will accept one of the following:

  • Credit Check - A credit check can be run for a $3.00 fee.  If the rating is acceptable to the co-op, no deposit will be required.

  • Letter of Credit - A new member can provide one acceptable letter of credit which must cover the last 12 months of electric service.  A letter of credit can be faxed to our Service Order Department at (336) 356-5298.  A good letter of credit must be presented within 3 days of signing up for service or the deposit will be charged onto the account.

  • Guarantor Contract/Co-Signer - The co-signer must be a member of Surry-Yadkin EMC for over one year with a satisfactory payment record.  A member has a satisfactory payment record if, during the past 12 months they have not been delinquent more than twice, have not been on a Cut Off List, has not had more than two returned checks or has not tampered with the meter.  This individual will sign a guarantor contract stating that he/she will be responsible for up to the amount of the deposit if the final bill is not paid in full.

The security deposit you pay at the time you join Surry-Yadkin EMC begins earning interest after 90 days.  The deposit is automatically credited to your account after two years, provided the credit history on the account meets established criteria.  If a satisfactory payment record has not been established within the 24 month period, the deposit will remain on the account and the payment record will continue to be reviewed on a year to year basis until a satisfactory payment record is established.
